Discussion among cloud experts and commentators generally tends to revolve fairly heavily around ‘PaaS vs. IaaS vs. SaaS’ – i.e. which is better, which is the most important. The debate has, however, taken on a new dimension in recent weeks with many people discussing the future of PaaS as an independent cloud computing service category. Some have suggested that PaaS is ‘dying’ or ‘doomed’ while others have rebuffed this claim, countering that PaaS is a key category. Many people looking at the so-called death of PaaS have pointed out how IaaS may come to incorporate both infrastructure and platform as a service.

GigaOm has posted an article by James Urquhart, that looks at how the term ‘Services-as-a-Platform’ may be a better moniker for the required cloud model. Urquhart points out that using this term helps us to sidestep the blurred lines between IaaS, SaaS and PaaS but also provides us with an all-encompassing term for cloud computing. You can read the article at GigaOm.
